A contract for the Silesian Philharmonic extension has been signed. The extension will be possible thanks to PLN 19,3 million grant of The Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment. A total worth of the development is PLN 31,5 million. The Silesia Voivodeship will pay the rest. The enlargement has to be finished to the end of 2011. The architectural design was prepared by Consultor Sp. z o.o.
The Philharmonic has already obtained a building permit and chose a contract engineer. The next step is to select a prime contractor.
Music lovers shall be able to enjoy an organ designed by prof. Julian Gembalski and air-conditioning of the concert hall and of all interiors, a new chamber music hall for 110 seats with appropriate stage equipment and a grand piano, a conference hall for 40 people, a musical café with a Green Garden with 82 seats, a store with albums and publications of the Philharmonic, an extended ticket-office hall, a more comfortable cloakroom, elevators, total liquidation of architectural barriers for the disabled. The centre of Katowice shall obtain an aesthetic building, maintaining the greatest values of this historic classicist structure, completed with interesting contemporary solutions.
The Silesian Philharmonic will be open not only during concerts; the musical café and the Green Musical Garden located at the last storey will be available daily until the evening. In the café an absolute novelty in the whole country’s scale will be stations for listening to archival recordings of the Silesian Philharmonic musicians and to collections of the sound library. It is also planned to establish a Silesian Musical Library – a series of concerts and their recordings – of music by Silesian composers starting from the old times and finishing with the contemporary music. The recordings will be forwarded to school and academies of music for didactic reasons, as well as to libraries throughout the whole country. It will also be possible to listen to them in the musical café.
The schedule of the project execution assumes two years of renovation and construction works, during which the old building with the concert hall will be closed only for one year. Therefore, artistic activities will not be interrupted. During the renovation of the concert hall the Philharmonic will be inviting all music lovers to other locations in Katowice.
The concert hall of the Silesian Philharmonic in the building erected in 1873 is the oldest hall in Katowice designed for playing music. The Philharmonic is localized on Sokolska Street.
