Grupa 5 Architekci has signed a contract to design the new building of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Faculty (WRiTV) of the nationwide unit of the University of Silesia in Katowice. Last year, the architectural studio won the architectural competition to prepare a design concept of the new seat.
The University is the investor of the undertaking. The design work of the 5 388,5 sq. meters building will take 16 months. The preparatory and construction works are scheduled to be finished in 24 months. Costs of the project are estimated at PLN 22 mln.
In November last year, the City of Katowice gave away a 2 258 sq. meters municipal plot to the University. The new Faculty’s seat will be built on the land situated at 3 Św. Pawła St.
Grupa 5 Architekci prepared the competition project in co-operation with the Spanish BAAS studio. The team was lead by Jordi Badia (principal of BAAS) and Mikołaj Kadłubowski (prinicipal of Grupa 5). The jury justified the decision saying “the building shall become a city icon”.
