A cornerstone ceremony of the extension of new Silesia City Center was held today at the construction site. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the investor – Immofinanz Group, management of the Center, Katowice Mayor Piotr Uszok and pensioned coal miners, who laid the cornerstone.
One year from now, SCC will boast 310 stores, an area of 86 000 sq. meters, one of the largest parking lots in Katowice and will become one of the biggest shopping centers in Poland. A last year’s turnover of Silesia City Center was estimated at PLN 1 billion.
“Silesia is an amazing place from a foreign investor’s perspective. On the one hand, it is proud of its roots, tradition and history. On the other hand, it is ready for change – it grows dynamically and is open for investors. This largely influenced our decision to extend the shopping center” – Walter Woelfler from Immofinanz Group said during the ceremony.
The extension of Silesia City Center is one of the biggest commercial investments in Katowice at present. According to the investor, a scale of the project is already attracting new reputable brands which have not been available in the Silesian region or even in whole Poland before. Among new confirmed tenants are Van Graaf, Red Valentino, Calvin Klein Jeans and Guess.
“Now we have 12 months of hard construction works ahead of us. Yesterday I heard that 40 tons of soil are transported out of the construction site each day. These numbers alone are already impressive” – said Walter Woelfler. “Like coal deposits in the past, the further potential of this place is waiting to be discovered. Immofinanz Group has undertaken this investment to tap the full potential, develop it and show it to the whole country” – he added.
Silesia City Center is located within the area of former “Gottwald” coal-mine, closed in 1996. The Center was commissioned on 17th of November 2005. Currently it features 66 000 sq. m. of usable area and 250 sales units. The new SCC was designed by a team consisting of Bose International Planning and Architecture, Stabil and ARUP. Erbud S.A. is a prime contractor of the extension.
