Today, the City Hall of Katowice and Polimex-Mostostal S.A. signed a contract for a construction work on the International Convention Center. The ceremony took place in the presence of Elżbieta Bieńkowska, Minister of Regional Development, city and regional authorities and prime contractor representatives.
The offer of Polimex-Mostostal worth gross PLN 252,68 million was chosen from amongst twelve bids. The aim of the investment is to build a modern congress center exceeding a total area of 34 thousand square meters and adapted to host up to 12 thousand visitors at one time. The project is co-financed by the European Union funds within the European Regional Development Funds’ Regional Operational Programme of the Silesian Voivodeship for the years 2007 – 2013. A total estimated cost of the project is PLN 304,5 million. The grant aid is PLN 152,8 million. An amount of PLN 50,6 million will be financed from the City budget, the residual value – PLN 101,1 million – is to be covered from the European Investment Bank loan.
“We estimate that the International Convention Center will be visited by more than 80 thousand guests yearly. At the beginning, the strong and recognized brand of neighbouring “Spodek” will be very helpful while creating an image of the venue as a business tourism destination” – said Piotr Uszok, Mayor of Katowice. According to the “Poland Meetings and Events Industry Report 2011” report published on 23rd of September about 18 thousand events and business meetings took place in the country last year. 1071 of them were organized in Katowice which gives the City a fifth place among the most popular business tourism destinations in Poland. “Thanks to the ICC we hope to improve the result” – Uszok added.
It is planned to kick-off a construction work in the second half of October. Polimex-Mostostal is obliged to complete the works by the end of May 2013.
In the months to come, the City Hall is also to choose a company which will manage the International Convention Center and the “Spodek” sport and exhibition hall. Two companies compete for the concession.
