On 15th of June, Katowice was visited by the Selection Committee of the European Capital of Culture event in 2016. The main purpose of the visit was to learn more about the City’s candidature before the final decision on 21st of June saying which city will get the title.
In October last year, the City was qualified to the second stage of the competition together with Gdańsk, Lublin, Warsaw and Wrocław.
Mayors of Katowice and Cracow, Piotr Uszok and Jacek Majchrowski, signed today a letter of intent for cooperation in the area of culture between both cities. Consequently, Cracow – the European Capital of Cutlure of the year 2000 – formally starts to support Katowice efforts in a race for the European Capital of Culture’s title in 2016.
As can be read in the letter of intent, the cooperation will be based on joint projects in the area of
Tychy, Ruda Śląska, Sosnowiec, Bytom and Piekary Śląskie – five cities of fourteen creating the Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia (GZM), adopted resolutions to support Katowice in efforts to be designated as a European Capital of Culture in 2016 (ESK 2016). Following cities prepare necessary resolutions to join the idea.
In spite of fact, that only one city can win the European Capital of Culture’s title, a whole region may contribute and support the efforts.
Today was announced a shortlist of Polish cities which compete for the title of the European Capital of Culture 2016. The pre-selection took place in the Grand Theatre – National Opera in Warsaw. Five cities were qualified for the second stage. The list includes Katowice.

Representatives of the European Capital of Culture 2016 Office of Katowice presented today the City’s application which had been filed yesterday in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Katowice rivals 10 other Polish cities to become the capital of culture in 2016.
Between 13th and 15th of October 2010 all eleven cities will present their motions in Warsaw.
