SICAL: at work

Only about a half of the year left to conclude construction works of the Scientific Information Center and Academic Library (SICAL) – a joint venture of the University of Silesia and the University of Economics in Katowice. Today, a press conference took place at the construction site presenting works progress.

So called a hybrid library, the Center will make accessible all types of documents and media types as books, magazines, data bases, e-books, audio-visuals and teaching materials for disabled.

The location of the Scientific Information Center and Academic Library on campus was an impulse to enhance the significance of the University not only by the construction of an important facility, but also by the new urbanist composition and design.

The building of the Library has been located at the intersection of two axes of campus. At the intersection place of the axes, in front of the library, a central university square called Forum has been designed.

The Scientific Information Center and Academic Library (SICAL) is located in the City Center of Katowice in the area of the University of Silesia campus. The stone used for the façade, whose colour is composed with the context of the place and harmonizes with the red bricks on the existing buildings. 4 004 glazed cavities in the façade will doze at night artificial light on the façade, and in daytime – allow the flow of the dispersed natural light into the interior of the Library.

Fit-out works of the Scientific Information Center and Academic Library are progressing and the building becomes more coloured. The SICAL is covered by scaffolds which enable workers to fit windows and to install heat insulation elements and elevation of slabs of a red Indian sandstone. According to designers from the HS99 architectural studio, there will be 4004 windows in the building facade, each 20 centimeters wide.
