The City Hall of Katowice is going to adopt a resolution for development of the Theater of Opera and Ballet. The building would be localized in the area of future City’s cultural district near the “Spodek” Arena. This zone is already planned for the Silesian Museum, NPRSO building and International Convention Center. Administrative procedures for the Theater could be run not earlier than in 2015.
“Spodek”, the show-sport hall finished in 1971, is the architectural world class symbol of Katowice and Poland. The Hall, in the form of a disc at an angle, encircled with a gallery and surmounted with a dome, lived to see a renovation. Thanks to PLN 70 million, “Spodek” gained new seats and lightings, round-shaped diode screen, wireless Internet, new fittings, fire controls and high-class 3D monitoring. The Hall structure was fortified and the roof was refitted.
When last year Rank Progress lauched details of Polyfunctional Center, a new mix-use complex near “Spodek” many was impressed. Everybody realized that the three towers design prepared by Q2 Studio might create a new symbol of Katowice. Dariusz Wyborski, PR Manager at Rank Progress said to katowicethecity.com what is currently happening with this project.
During the last conference related to the City Center redevelopment, the Mayor of Katowice, Piotr Uszok claimed that a building permit for the International Convention Center is going to be given in 2009. After that, the City Hall will call for a bid for a prime contractor. The construction works should be finished in 2012. According to the project manager, Janusz Nowak, the ICC will be on time as the total amount of EUR 46 mln for the development is already guaranteed (half of the amount is granted by EU).
The Q2 Studio from Wrocław is preparing an architectural design of Polifunctional Center which will be developed at Olimpijska St near Spodek. The investor (Rank Progress) is planned to build a multifuction facility with 93 000 sq.m rentable space. The property profile is apartments, hotel, offices and retail. Currently, Rank Progress is starting to obtain administrative consents.
