In late January, the City Hall of Katowice had issued a tender for companies interested in managing the International Convention Center (ICC) and the “Spodek” sport and exhibition hall. An opening of bids took place last Thursday, on 31st of March. Two companies decided to tender for the concession.
These are Arena Management Ltd. based in Warsaw and SMG Polska Ltd. from the United States with a Polish office located in Warsaw. As far as the first company’s activities are rather mystified, SMG is the well known world firm of venue management founded in 1977. It manages 77 arenas, nine stadiums, 67 convention centers and 52 performing art centers. In Poland, the company manages the city stadium of Wrocław.
“Both companies perform financial and technical conditions detailed in the tender specifications including an experience in organizing at least 100 events. Now, we are going to negotiate terms of concession. I will take from three to six months. We will be able to announce the name of concessioner in the second half of 2011” – said Janusz Nowak, Project Manager of the ICC.
A chosen firm will be granted a concession for management services for a period not shorter than 8 years and not exceeding 15 years with having rights to profits during that time. The company will be obliged to a property management and commercial activities. These are involving technical issues and administration of the buildings as well as marketing strategy, brand creation across Poland and abroad, events planning and organization, winning exhibitors, sponsors and advertisements.
The International Convention Center will be developed near existing “Spodek” linked directly with the hall. Together, both venues will be able to host about 20 000 visitors at one time.
