A great opening of the Scientific Information Center and Academic Library (SICAL) is planned for October 2011. By now, some outfitting was concluded inside the building, and last works are drawing to an end. The finished spaces are currently provided with furnitures and fit-outs. The SICAL is going to be a joint library of the University of Silesia and the University of Economics.

Tychy, Ruda Śląska, Sosnowiec, Bytom and Piekary Śląskie – five cities of fourteen creating the Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia (GZM), adopted resolutions to support Katowice in efforts to be designated as a European Capital of Culture in 2016 (ESK 2016). Following cities prepare necessary resolutions to join the idea.
In spite of fact, that only one city can win the European Capital of Culture’s title, a whole region may contribute and support the efforts.
The Business Center of Katowice (Katowickie Centrum Biznesu, KCB), an office building located in the very heart of the City not far away from “Spodek” and the roundabout, was an inglorious icon of “unfinished business” for many years. Now, it seems that the building will be completed at last. Maciej Jaglarz, a businessman and owner of the “Separator” office building at 2 Korfantego Av. and co-owner of the “Profi-Lingua” language schools’ chain, bought the KCB and want to change its gloomy history.
