Laying cornerstone of AITC

On Thursday, Prof. Leszek Żabiński – rector of the University of Economics in Katowice, together with representatives of Mostostal Warszawa and local government have laid a cornerstone for the Advanced Information Technology Center (AITC).

Advanced Information Technology Center under construction

The construction work on the building has been commenced by Mostostal Warszawa, the prime contractor of the investment, over 12 months ago. A few weeks ago the builders have topped-out the Center. The AITC is currently the biggest individual undertaking being carried out by the University (together with the University of Silesia, the University of Economics is also engaged in the joint project of the Scientific Information Center and Academic Library). A total cost of the undertaking including a modern IT equipment is estimated at almost PLN 50 million co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

“We prepare laboratories and reading-rooms that will surely take students and lecturers’ study comfort to the higher level” – commented Piotr Mołdrzyk, deputy chancellor for General Affairs at the University of Economics in Katowice. The AITC will offer a full-range capacity for teaching information and communication technology (ICT) skills.

IT services and infrastructure planned for the AITC will be based on the so called cloud computing. Thanks to the new 7 800 sq. meters facility, the University will be able to improve the education in such fields as spatial economics (Geographic Information System – GIS, system of landed property, informatics tools for public administration, project management), finance and accounting (financial and accounting system, stock-exchange system, financial management, tools of investment analysis), management and economy (CRM, logistics, personnel and store systems, supply chain management, e-logistics).

“We are extremely pleased to be engaged in such an innovative and ecological project designed for many new generations of students” – said Marek Józefiak, CEO of Mostostal Warszawa. For example, the modern ecological solutions will help to re-use rain water in bathrooms and to keep greenery, roof solars and heat pumps are to provide hot water.

The AITC is located on Bogucicka St. close to other University’s facilities. According to Mostostal Warszawa, the building will be delivered in June 2013 and is expected to open the Center at the beginning of October next year.
