BOTY 2012: Katowice superlibrary wins

The ArchDaily Building of the Year Awards (BOTY) were decided on 14th of February. The Scientific Information Center and Academic Library was named the Best Building of the Year in the museums and libraries category.

After 70 000 votes from readers, ArchDaily announced the winners in fourteen categories. From close to 3 000 projects, the jury pronounced finalists in each category. In the final round, the Katowice building (designed by HS99)

Super library opens in Katowice

On Friday, rectors of the University of Silesia and the University of Economics in Katowice officially opened the Scientific Information Center and Academic Library (SICAL). The design prepared by HS99 and the applied solutions – including an RFID technology – make the building probably the most modern library in Poland.

“This project puts us on an equal footing with other scientific units of the globe” – Prof. Wiesław Banyś, rector of the University of Silesia, said during the opening ceremony.

Two universities libraries move to SICAL

Two libraries of the University of Silesia and the University of Economics in Katowice are moving its thousands of volumes of publications into a new shared seat – the Scientific Information Center and Academic Library (SICAL). The grand opening of the facility is planned together with the start of new academic year 2012/2013.
