Several thousands of people came to see the new Railway Station hall on Monday, 29th of October. The grand opening was started at 4 p.m. and brought crowds of citizens and travelers who wanted to be the first to visit the building.
“Nowadays, people gather again in such railway stations. This new hall in Katowice is a symbol of changes that Poland has undergone over recent 20 years” – said Sławomir Nowak, minister of transport, construction and maritime economy.
The building covers an area of 5 800 sq. meters of which 3 000 sq. meters is designed for service and handling passengers. “It is estimated the Station hall can hold up to 5 000 people at one time” – explained Łukasz Kurpiewski, press spokesman of PKP S.A. The new facility will have about 12 million visitors a year.
During the opening and in previous days, all interested people had a chance to record welcome messages for travelers. Such messages were also recorded by well-known Katowice citizens. According to Daniel Muc, press spokesman of Strabag, 320 welcoming spots were recorded and played through speakers at the Station on Monday.
